Teaching Philosophy
Currently in in addition to my teaching work at the University of Alberta, I work as a community liaison connecting community members to mental health support groups, arts and education and grant opportunities. I support community members to access funds for community projects that activate community belonging. The support groups I have facilitated between 2019 and 2023 used best practices and current research to support mental health. My work focussed on enabling individuals to become connected to groups where they are seen, validated and can safely express themselves. My work is focussed around deepening a sense of belonging and contribution to community. My work at U of A, Augustana Faculty utilizes applied theatre techniques and Asset based engaged learning. I believe our personal story’s have the power to strengthen the individual and the larger community. My strongest desire is to educate students and community members in successful project building using sustainable anti-carceral practices.
Robert Wilson's "The Black Rider"
Geography does not have to limit your success in life. You can do amazing things anywhere. You can start from anywhere and develop the skills you need to unleash something incredible into the world. My student production of Robert Wilson's "The Black Rider" in Camrose is just one example that you can do incredible things no matter where you are, even in the beginning stages of your career.
I explained to Mr. Wilson that just because an artist is limited by geography does not mean that they must be limited in their artistic palette. Although we are not the chosen few who are born to New York or anywhere fabulous that perhaps the spirit of the eccentric piano teacher could live on via the legacy of his work.
